Let’s talk about New Year's resolutions!
It's funny because I used to wish people saying, “May your sorrows last as long as your New Year's resolutions” That just goes on to say, how much problematic new year resolutions are for all of us.
So today, let's start approaching new year resolutions slightly differently. Let us do this exercise- it is an exercise that my mentor made me do. So I'm sort of passing on the favour!
Get a piece of paper and a pen. Yes, the old style of doing things.
And just without limits, envision your 2021.
What do you want to achieve?
What do you need to be?
Who do you think you are on the 31st of December 2021?
Just Dream, Dream without boundaries, dream without borders. And when you are done, come back to the next bit.
Once you have identified your dreams for 2021, figure out who it is that you are on the 31st of December 2021?
Who are you being?
Who is it that has smashed all of those goals?
And what does he or she feel like?
What do they feel like?
Write that down on the piece of paper as well. And once you are done with that, figure out who it is that you need it to be throughout 2021 to be that person on the 31st of December 2021?
Who from 2020 do you carry on being and who from 2020?
Do you need to stop being Once you have identified that just let go of the bits that are not serving you anymore?
And I know this is incredibly hard because letting go is hard. It is hard for ourselves to detach ourselves from our emotions from our surroundings.
So what I will ask you to do next is write down all of the things that you did in 2020 very objectively, not with judgment, but very objectively write down everything that you did in 2020.
And now when you are done, figure out which of the things that you did, will keep serving you in 2021, your version of 2021 carry those on, and the ones that are not going to serve you from 2021 check them out.
In fact, I would say write those bits down on another piece of paper and burn it.
Physically burn it!
Burning does something very powerful to our nervous systems. It just helps us let go of certain emotions. And that is why it's such a powerful ritual. Now I know this might sound woo-woo to some people if that's you don't have to do it.
But if you will play along, please do that because it is actually incredibly powerful. And once you have identified all of the things that you need to continue doing in 2021, put them onto your vision board or you know your sticky mirror in your bathroom, or your study table or as a wallpaper on your phone or your laptop or computer whatever device you're using. And keep coming back to that because that is how you train your neural system to be that person that you want it to be on the 31st of December 2021.
Do this with me, don't skip this exercise because honestly if you do this with me, your 2021 will look different to how you have approached every other new year.
